Friday Harbor Fly-In July 27
Don't miss out on this years fly-in. It's free of charge, the gates open at 10 am and there will be lots of airplanes! Westwind will have a new Cessna 172 Skyhawk (Courtesy of Cessna Aircraft) available for their Discovery Flying Challenge. The airplane will also be available the day before July 26 at Westwind!

Six pilot interns took off from Winfield, Kansas June 15 to launch the 2013 Discover Flying Challenge. The pilots will fly cross-country for the next eight weeks to raise awareness for aviation and philanthropy. Cessna partnered with the American Red Cross, United Way, EAA - Young Eagles, Special Olympics and Veterans Airlift Command for the 2013 event.

New Private Pilot October 18
Kenn Aufderhar passed his private pilot checkride in his Cessna 172 taildragger conversion. When Dan checked with the examiner about the ride, he said "Not much to say about it". That's the sign of a very good check ride.

First Solo- September 25
Travis Ayers soloed today. You can tell by the grin on his face it was a very successful day. Well done Travis!

Special services - arrive depart in style!
Recently Westwind Aviation was asked to deliver the bride and groom to a reception at the Future of Flight building at Paine Field in Everett, WA. Arrival was coordinated to arrive as the large glass door (see photo below) was opening in front of all the guests. It made for a "grand entry" and the guests were surprised when the aircraft taxied up. At the end of the evening, the bride and groom departed and made a short flight around the area while viewing all the guests who were on the rooftop of the building with sparklers in hand. It was quite a sight!

Patrick soloed in his own airplane on May 24th, a beautfiful evening at the Friday Harbor Airport. He made it look easy!

Jon Burt passed instrument checkride with flying colors. The examiner said it was one of the best instrument checkrides he has given. Well deserved and hat's off to Jon- way to go!


Memorial Service for Jim Smith
Jim Smith passed away suddenly last Sunday. We will greatly miss his zest for life, love of flying and his wonderful smile. Westwind will be hosting a memorial service for Jim on Friday afternoon at 5 pm at the Westwind hangar. Everyone is welcome.


First Solo- March 26
Sam Heller soloed today on his 16th birthday! Sam's been flying 303DJ since he was 14. His day consisted of school, a 3:30 doctors appointment for his flight physical on Orcas Island and then a flight with Dan over to Lopez Island where he soloed for the first time. A hearty congratulations to Sam, he's waited a long time to solo- well deserved.

Susanne Meitzner soloed twice today - first at Skagit/Bayview and then at Friday Harbor airport. Way to go Susanne! There was a large smile involved. Susanne and Instructor Jim Wood pictured in front of 303DJ. She received congratulations from fellow pilots after her solo at Friday Harbor.

First Flying Lesson at 10
Ten year old Levi Doenges (son of Tom Doenges) took his first flight lesson Monday October 17 in N303DJ, Westwind Aviation's Cessna 150. Instructor Dan DeShon says "All that flight simulator time paid off and he asked a lot of good questions". Levi has spent hours on the computer with his flight simulator program. He asked to fly over his house and over Shaw Island, which they did. It was a beautiful clear, sunny fall day- a great time for his first flying lesson. Levi is looking forward to more flights and says "I really love aviation".


First Solo
Patricia Damon soloed for the first time Friday, July 3rd. She admits to havig "butterflys" bigtime, but made 3 very nice landings. Congrats Patricia!


International Learn to Fly Day May 21

Westwind will have an open house to celebrate the Learn to Fly day from 11-3. Join owner Dan DeShon and staff for a tour of their facility and aircraft, including the only twin-engine charter aircraft in the San Juan Islands.

At noon and 2 p.m. there will be a presentation "All you need to know about learning to Fly". Also featured will be introductory flying lessons. Refreshments will be served and there will be a drawing after each presentation for an introductory flight lessons.

Roy Franklin- the passing of an island aviation pioneer

Roy, who pioneered air service to the San Juan Islands beginning in the late 1940's, passed away at his home in Friday Harbor Thursday afternoon February 4. Flying from a grass strip to begin with, Roy eventually purchased the property the current Friday Harbor airport stands on, developing the airport out of 64 acres of woods in the mid 50's. His airline served the whole county and tales of his exploits can be found in his book "Island Bush Pilot", a great read. He will be greatly missed. He was very supportive of aviation and we were fortunate to have Roy attend Westwind Aviation gatherings.

Dan receives FAA Team Award
Westwind's Chief Pilot (and owner) Dan DeShon received an FAA Team Award for his efforts (as a member of the FAA Safety Team) in briefing area pilots on the Olympic TFR and Special Use Airspace restrictions last winter. The commendation letter from the FAA stated it was the first time a "zero violations" record was achieved during any Olympic Games.

Come one, come all to the First Annual Fly-In See Schedule and Map

Looonnnggg Cross Country

Don Will, Kyle Davies and Dan flew N12645 from Friday Harbor to San Diego and back. Kyle and Dan departed FHR and flew over to BVS to pick up Don, then flew south to Kelso, Roseburg, and Sacramento. The next leg of the trip ended at Harris Ranch for a wonderful steak dinner. Approaching the LA area clearance was received to transition the shoreline flyway right over LAX and on to Montgomery Field in San Diego. The return trip two days later was an encounter with perfect weather conditions all along the route, departing Montgomery and stopping in Fresno, then Redding, on to Salem, and a beautiful night arrival at PDX. After delivering Don back to BVS, Kyle and Dan turned west for what felt like a very short flight home to FHR. Now that is a cross-country!

From NBAA News - FAA changes in taxiing instructions
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued Notices 7110.528 and 7110.747, both effective June 30, 2010, that significantly alter the past practices of issuing taxi instructions to the departure runway or ramp area that allow aircraft to cross all runways that the taxi route intersects, except the assigned runway. Garmin 1000 Class 6-9:30 pm Monday, September 13
The course will cover the G1000 operation in general and G1000 system/172SP systems in our brand new 2007 Cessna 172SP. The class will include interactive simulated G1000 operation. If you want to checkout in the 172SP or you'd just like to get some exposure to the G1000 system, this class is for you. Cost is $100, class limited to 7 participants.

We offer an accelerated 12 day course to obtain a Sport Pilot license in the SportStar as well as regular training. Evektor sales are handled thru our office by Northwest Sportsplanes LLC. This is an opportunity to discuss light sport aircraft and sport pilot flying. Refreshments will be served.

New addition to the fleet
April 14- Dan, Loren, Mary Ellen and Steve back home with Superhawk 68Q. Dan and Loren picked it up in Atlanta then flew to St. Louis to meet Mary Ellen and Steve for a wonderful cross country back to Friday Harbor. A great experience was had by all.
